I started Jasmine Hall in 2004 after a 20-year career as an international journalist, to combine a passion for India, enthusiasm for art and commitment to fair trade.

I first visited India in 1981 as a volunteer teacher, living in Bihar for a year, and returned many times as a journalist. In 1986, I wrote a report on the social costs of foreign aid which called for a more sustainable form of assistance in the form of fair trade.

From the late 1980s, I reported throughout southern Africa for the BBC and UK newspapers. I had my first taste for business in 1991 when I co-founded The Post, now Zambia's largest independent newspaper, and later worked in Sydney, Mumbai and Singapore for the New York firm Bloomberg.

I've long been intrigued by the possibilities in India and Africa of combining traditional craft and contemporary design. Craft has to evolve in order to survive and ensure the prosperity of its skilled artisans.

I'm a firm believer in building partnerships with customers. Quality, reliability and value are at the forefront of our business, and I'm always ready to listen to ways in which we can do better.
